What motivates you to do this important but challenging work?
A lot of our work doesn’t allow us to see someone directly and immediately being helped. But now, we’re able to coordinate emergency rides to warming centers, shelters, and winter crisis services for anyone in need.
Being able to help someone right away, and actually track the ride to see they were picked up and dropped off safely, makes me feel like what I’m doing matters. For some of our callers, this really could mean the difference between life and death.
On the other side of that, I love helping connect people to resources that might make a lasting impact. Not every resource fits every need, but it feels great to connect someone with a food pantry they didn’t know about, or to help a mom find emergency formula or diapers.
If I can make a positive impact on just one person each shift, that’s what helps me push through the tough days.
What’s one thing everyone should know about 211?
We are a resource directory. We do our best to connect people with resources to suit the needs they have and things they might not have even realized they needed. We might not always have a resource someone calls in for, but there is always a resource available that could help benefit each caller if they’re willing to accept it!
