Who is alice?

Across our state, 1.8 million households are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of basic needs. This includes families living in poverty and ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households who are working full-time, yet still live paycheck to paycheck and are one unexpected expense away from crisis.

United Way of Greater Toledo is a partner in the United For ALICE movement. United For ALICE, a U.S. research organization driving solutions to financial hardship, is led by United Way of Northern New Jersey.

MEET ALICE

For far too many households, the cost of living outpaces what they earn, and traditional public assistance is often not available. These are ALICE® households, Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, a term that more accurately describes today’s reality of financial hardship for people across the country.

Many ALICE households work in jobs that are essential to our community, educating children, supporting health care, and keeping local businesses and services running. Yet when income falls short of covering basic needs, families are forced to make impossible choices such as choosing between quality child care and paying the rent, or filling a prescription and fixing a car. These decisions may feel temporary, but their impact is long-lasting, affecting not only ALICE households, but the strength and stability of our entire community.

When ALICE families are financially stable, our communities are stronger and more resilient.

About United for ALICE®

United For ALICE is a U.S. research organization driving innovation, research and action to improve life across the country for ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and for all.

Through the development of the ALICE measurements, a comprehensive, unbiased picture of financial hardship has emerged. Harnessing this data and research on the mismatch between low-paying jobs and the cost of survival, ALICE partners convene, advocate and collaborate on solutions that promote financial stability at local, state and national levels.

This grassroots ALICE movement, led by United Way of Northern New Jersey, has spread to 40 states and includes United Ways, corporations, nonprofits and foundations. We are United For ALICE. For more information, visit unitedforalice.org.
