At United Way of Greater Toledo, we recently had the pleasure of sitting down with our CEO, Wendy Pestrue, to reflect on her six years of impactful leadership. Wendy’s journey is a testament to the power of diverse experiences, strategic thinking, and a commitment to community collaboration.

A Unique Background Shaping Leadership

Wendy didn’t follow a typical path to becoming CEO. She started in nursing, then moved to teaching, went to law school, and even worked in politics. All these different jobs helped her understand many parts of our community. Wendy’s experience in government and fundraising showed her where public agencies are strong and where they need help. This is important for making sure our donations fill the right gaps.

Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic and Embracing Data

Wendy’s leadership was particularly tested during the COVID-19 pandemic. Just before the pandemic hit, United Way reinstated local community resource advisors for the 211 service, which became a lifeline for many. The pandemic highlighted the importance of local insights and the ability to adapt quickly to emerging needs, such as organizing food distribution and vaccination efforts.

Under Wendy’s guidance, United Way started using data to make better decisions and show our impact. We use data to find out what our community needs, measure progress, and make sure our resources are used well.

“One of the rules we try to maintain here in United Way is that philanthropic dollars go in after the government dollars, because that’s the gap filler we need to use as intentionally as possible.”

Strategic Plan and Future Goals

Looking to the future, United Way’s plan focuses on working with partners, using data better, and getting bigger grants to help more people. Wendy wants United Way to not only keep going but also grow its influence and address bigger issues.

Legacy of Leadership and Community Impact

Wendy’s ultimate goal is to create a community where people don’t need as much help because they have the resources to thrive on their own. She hopes her legacy will be one of empowerment, where the foundations laid during her time continue to support and uplift the community for many years.

Wendy Pestrue has service as CEO of United Way of Greater Toledo has been marked by resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to community well-being. As she continues to lead, Wendy’s vision and dedication promise to drive United Way towards even greater heights, ensuring that every dollar raised has a profound and lasting impact on the lives of those in Lucas, Ottawa, and Wood counties.
