Help hard working, low-moderate income individuals and families keep more of what they earn and become financially stable for the future.
Each year, United Way volunteers assist thousands of low-moderate income individuals prepare their taxes. For many clients, tax credits and refunds are critical to moving from poverty towards prosperity. Volunteers also connect these individuals to public benefits and financial coaches to create better money saving habits and increase financial knowledge.
How it Works
From February through April, United Way volunteers offer free tax preparation assistance at libraries, community centers and United Way of Greater Toledo offices in Lucas, Wood and Ottawa Counties. Two types of volunteers are critical to the success of this program:
- Volunteer Tax Preparers walk clients through their taxes, ensuring they receive all of the tax credits that they are eligible for.
- Volunteer Intake and Benefits Specialists (VIBS) greet clients, assist with paperwork and connect clients to additional support, such as financial coaching and public benefits.
Every site also requires a Site Coordinator that checks volunteer work, ensures all returns are done correctly and answers questions.
