Partners In Education – The Uniters

The Uniters is a video series that features United Way community partners

United Way fights for the education, health and financial stability of every person in Lucas, Wood and Ottawa counties.

“I saw the volunteers really working with the students and helping move forward their literacy skills and helping take the weight off the teacher”

For this episode of The Uniters, I visited Lucas County community grantee, Partners in Education and interviewed Executive Director, Brooke Schlageter and Director of Tutoring Programs, Sharonda Diggins.

Partners in Education is an organization that develops and fosters partnerships between area schools and northwest Ohio businesses, government agencies, organizations and churches. Funded by contributions from businesses, individuals and the community, we leverage our most important investment — the education of children.

They offer a variety of programs and services that help students of all ages achieve success in their education and give support to education providers.

United Way Grant-Supported Program

The Mentors in Toledo Schools program was originally known as the Ohio Reads program, which was a nationally-supported program focused on helping students find tutors and mentors. Since then, they have worked with over 500 students across local public and private schools. School day tutoring and mentoring is provided one-to-one by highly trained volunteer mentor/tutors. Classroom lessons are used in the program to catch struggling students up to their non-struggling peers. The strength of this program is in its volunteers who are critical in developing relationships and making learning fun for students and assisting teachers in ensuring they are meeting the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

If you are interested in getting involved with this program by volunteering please visit their site or reach out to Sharonda Diggins (sdiggins@partnerstoledo.org).
