United Way in Wood County

Emergency Food and Shelter Funds

Each year, Congress appropriates a certain amount of funds to be distributed across the country for emergency food and shelter purposes. Each "jurisdiction's" award is based upon that jurisdiction's total number of unemployed as compared to the total number of unemployed in all qualifying jurisdictions.

This year, under Phase 28 of the EFSP program, Wood County has been chosen to receive $108,118 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs. The application deadline was Monday, February 15, 2010, at 4:00 p.m.

The local Board will be meeting shortly to determine distribution.

About Us

Did you know that Wood County covers nearly 621 square miles and is home to approximately 30,000 families (120,000 individuals)? United Way in Wood County is proud to serve these individuals and help connect people and resources throughout this vast and largely rural area.

Led by volunteers
United Way serves Wood County residents through its Bowling Green office and with the help of local volunteers who are actively involved in community planning and needs-identification. In fact, it is these volunteers who decide how United Way funds are to be distributed in the county.

Connecting people and resources

In November 2006, United Way 2-1-1 was unveiled in Wood County to further assist residents in finding help and volunteer opportunities in their area. This important service acts in coordination with No Wrong Door, a unique program of Wood County Family & Children First Council, that maximizes one's chance of finding help in the often-complex service network.

Even more, people interested in volunteering can visit www.unitedwaytoledo.org/volunteer to learn more about available opportunities in their area that match their interests.

United Way is changing lives in Wood County by:

  • Focusing on parent education and parents' role as their child's first teacher.
  • Supporting after-school programs that help kids stay active and make healthy choices.
  • Making investments in domestic violence shelters to provide safe housing and support to battered women and their children.
  • Developing and promoting a food pantry network.
  • Expanding volunteerism through a Volunteer Coordinators Network and annual Recognition Breakfast.
