United Way AmeriCorps

What is AmeriCorps?

Often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps, AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.  AmeriCorps Members service through more than 2,100 non-profit public agencies and faith-based organizations.  They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters.  Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Learn and Serve America and Senior Corps.  Together, these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.

What is United Way AmeriCorps?

United Way AmeriCorps (UWA) is a program of United Way of Greater Toledo which coordinates AmeriCorps Members for a variety of organizations dedicated to serving the needs of Wood, Lucas, Ottawa and Seneca counties.  All UWA activities are aimed at “Getting Things Done”.

United Way AmeriCorps (UWA) has been an AmeriCorps program since 2004 – then known as Wood County Corps.  Bowling Green State University had been the fiscal agent from a planning grant year ‘04-‘05 through the second operational year.  United Way of Greater Toledo (UWGT) has become the program applicant/ fiscal agent assuming responsibility for the operation of UWA with the start of the ‘07-‘08 program years.

United Way of Greater Toledo was a key partner in the consortium that created the UWA program.  The United Way of Wood County’s Executive Director was a member of the Advisory Board and a key consultant for the program upon its inception.

The name changed from Wood County Corps to United Way AmeriCorps in November 2009.

UWGT is committed to programs that give help and mobilize resources.  With the focus of the UWA program to address the UWGT Community Impact Plan there will be a direct correlation between the work of corps members and major initiatives in the county.  A "Community Voices" survey conducted in 2005 by UWGT also supports the 4 major areas of deliverables for the UWA program--UWGT is confident that AmeriCorps Members can serve to enhance the community needs in the counties it serves, civically engage college students in service and set a standard to work with baby-boomers, college professors and the community at-large.

Our priorities include getting kids off to a great start, providing children and teen's strong foundations, empowering vulnerable families and individuals to thrive and giving help and mobilizing resources.  Each of these areas has defined desired results, program and funding plans to achieve those results and mechanisms for evaluation.
