Income
It is absolutely critical for families to be financially stable and independent. Without sufficient income to last through retirement, it is virtually impossible for families to be successful.
Toledo is the 8th poorest city in the nation.
In fact, 24.7% of Toledoans live below the poverty line, and do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs. Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, healthcare, and education. Currently, 40 million Americans are working in low-paying jobs without basic health and retirement benefits. For families walking a financial tightrope, unable to save for college, a home, or retirement, United Way is here to help.
Our Focus Areas
- Financial Stability Collaborative
- Stable Families Collaborative
- Tax Credits (Free Tax Preparation Program)
- Individual Development Accounts
Traditionally, many of these services existed in silos.
United Way is working with banks, nonprofit agencies, county commissioners, and other partners to integrate these services and create a bridge for families. Collaboration allow families to receive the maximum benefit by connecting pieces that have normally existed independently. For example, a family can participate in the Free Tax Preparation Program, and apply the refund to fund an Individual Development Acccount (IDA). They can then receive individualized counseling from volunteers in the Financial Opportunity Center on how to save money for the future and plan for the following year. They can also sign up for BankOn Toledo - a partnership that provides the "under-banked" and "unbanked" the opportunity to obtain access to financial services.
