Preserve the Charitable Tax Deduction | ADVOCATE

Brian Gallagher, president & CEO of United Way Worldwide, testified before Congress Tuesday, October 18, on an issue of vital importance to the nonprofit community and our nation – preserving the charitable tax deduction. Congressional leaders are considering ways to reduce the budget deficit, and the ability of donors to deduct charitable contributions from their taxes is at stake. Congress is considering tax law changes that would result in increased taxes on income donated to charities.

The nationally recognized Independent Sector estimates eliminating the deduction for charitable gifts would reduce annual giving by up to 36 percent - costing charities as much as $7 billion a year.

In Lucas, Wood and Ottawa counties your giving spirit is evident, allowing United Way of Greater Toledo to mobilize the caring power of community.  Nonprofits like United Way depend on your charitable spirit to support programs vital to our community and the most vulnerable. With today's economic realities, the charitable deduction is more important than ever.

United Way of Greater Toledo is keeping track of this issue, and recognizes the importance charitable deduction plays in enabling charities to meet the demand for critical services . An op-ed article by Gallagher also appeared in USA Today on this issue.
